  • Best Places to Go Stargazing in Southeast Asia

Best Places to Go Stargazing in Southeast Asia

It is impossible to resist the beauty of our vast blue sky, whether it’s displaying rainbows, streaked with orange, yellow and pink or littered with thousands of stars. Southeast Asia might be the world’s most humid region and holds quite the reputation for its light pollution, but get out of the cities and you’ll find Prussian blue skies perfect for soaking under the starlight. Today we have an arsenal of places where you can camp out and gaze into the night sky!

    Doi Chiang Dao, Thailand

Located in Chiang Mai province, Doi Chiang Dao is Thailand’s third highest mountain. Its name very appropriately translates to ‘City of Stars’. The limestone massif is also on the border with Myanmar and is one of Southeast Asia’s most renowned bird watching spots. Over here, you will fall asleep under a blanket of stars and wake up to bird songs when it’s dawn. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to obtain a permit in order to camp here.

    Halong Bay, Vietnam

Get away from the smog and city lights of Hanoi and stargaze from the deck of a boat as you are gently swayed by the movements of the sea. The overnight cruises are a great way to enjoy the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the day, you can explore mysterious caves in a kayak and sail along majestic limestone islands. By night, you can contemplate the vastness of our universe and cosmos.

    Pulau Perhentian, Malaysia

Bet you didn’t know that Malaysia is actually one of the best places on earth for stargazing! Due to its location on the Equator, stargazers can watch the stars of both the Northern and Southern skies. Especially in the state of Terengganu, there are a few prime spots for counting heavenly bodies, but the cream of the crop has to be Pulau Perhentian. Tucked away in a pristine environment away from the city lights, you can even see the Milky Way on especially good nights!

    Mount Bromo, Indonesia

Four hours drive away from Surabaya in East Java, Mount Bromo is an active volcano and one of the most photographed areas in Indonesia. Not surprising, given its picturesque views that get even more spectacular when night falls. A visit for star chasers and hikers just isn’t complete without a night spent here, basking in the celestial lights and then watching the sunrise in the morning.

    Mount Pulag, Philippines

In Philippines, Mount Pulag is the closest to heaven you’ll ever be. Reaching the top of this mountain might not be easy, but you know what they say – nothing worth having ever comes easy. The view of golden mountains in a sea of clouds is bound to steal your breath away, but just wait till dawn, where you’ll be able to see the Milky Way galaxy. Think of it as Mother Nature’s way of rewarding you for your hard work.

    Bagan, Myanmar

The ancient city of Bagan has the lowest levels of light pollution in the country, so you can be sure that the stars shine extra brightly here. With beautiful temples, pagodas and shrines, we can’t think of many other places on earth that are as serene as this place. Bring an overnight bag and camp outside for one of the memorable nights of your life.

    High Island Reservoir, Hong Kong

Surprised to see Hong Kong make the list? The city actually hides a few ideal spots where the stars can be admired. Part of the UNESCO Global Geopark in Hong Kong, High Island Reservoir is located in the south-eastern region of the Sai Kung Peninsula. In the daytime you’ll find visitors admiring sea caves, cutaway islands and hexagonal rock columns from past volcanic activities. By nightfall, the reservoir becomes a great place to enjoy views of the clear night sky. The best part? No scaling of great heights required!

    Ranu Kumbolo Lake, Indonesia

Isolated from civilization, the crater lake might be unheard of to foreigners but it’s a popular camping site amongst locals. Its vast camping grounds is also perfect for big groups that are travelling together. The hike to Ranu Kumbolo is very long and can take anywhere between three to six hours, but you can heave a sigh of relief because there are no mountains to climb here, only hilly terrains. With the lack of lights in surrounding areas, come nighttime you will see one of the best views of the Milky Way in all of Southeast Asia.

    Phnom Kulen, Cambodia

Thought to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia, Phnom Kulen translates to ‘Mountain of Lychees’ and is located in Siem Reap province. The mountain range is home to a giant reclining Buddha, impressive waterfalls (one of them was featured in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and lingas carved into the riverbed. By day, explore all that the national park has to offer. At night the ancient ruins transforms into an atmospheric place to spend the night. Gaze into heavenly bodies and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the forest and flowing water.

    Tips for Stargazing

    Check the moon

The moon is the biggest light polluter when it comes to stargazing and its light washes out the stars for two weeks every month. So if you want to stargaze with the best conditions, plan your trip to be between ten days before a new moon to four days afterwards.

    As well as the weather

Nobody wants to plan out an awesome trip only for it to be dampened by the weather, so keep up with the movements of the monsoon. The Milky Way is also most easily seen between July to October.

    Invest in some accessories

You don’t have to drop a bomb on a telescope (not to mention, they’re not exactly fun to lug around), but binoculars can help to reveal the heavenly bodies that are unavailable to the naked eye. You’ll also be able to use them for other activities such as sports events and bird watching. Talk about a good investment.

    Download a stargazing app

With technology these days, there are apps out there that not only let you see the positions of stars and planets, but also identify their names and how far away they are from Earth. Consider apps like Star Chart and Google Sky Map (basically Google Maps for outer space), which helps you identify what you’re looking at.

  • Top 5 Cities to Tour in Europe

Top 5 Cities to Tour in Europe

Everyone that moves substantially in on a Tour to Europe forms ideas of the places that become their most preferred, and become Tourism Places which have a particular significance for them. The character of a city goes a lot further than holiday Tourism Places. They go into the character of a city that makes it unique, and is not discovered just in those Tourism Places that make it popular but around the roads and Tourism Places where the residents occupy. Here are some of my preferred Tourism Places to check out in Europe:

    1. London

An excellent strolling city, much of London, uk may be noticed by keeping nearby with the Thames. Home to four Globe Culture Websites, London’s attraction is its well maintained and important traditional sites, such as The Structure of London, uk, whose record goes back nearly 1000 decades, to upriver to Big Ben, Westminster Abbey (over 1000 decades in history), and Buckingham Structure in the Town of Westminster. Because the city road styles haven’t changed much in hundreds of years, there is a disorderly way they’re set out. But that is part of the attraction in strolling this city, and the huge Subterranean Pipe program is perhaps the top huge transportation program in any city in Europe, if you can stroll no further. The next element as one of the Tourism Places in Europe to check out is London’s huge cinema region, one of the biggest of any city on the globe.

    2. Paris

This city obviously has plenty of appeal, but to me the biggest resource that makes this one of the Best Tourism Places to check out in Europe is the structure, thus creating this the perfect strolling city, even leading London, uk. Stay near the Seine, then at the Eiffel Structure stroll towards the Champs Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe, and you’ll see some of the best structure anywhere.

    3. Vienna

Vienna Among the Excellent Tourism Places to check out in Europe for music is Vienna. You can exeprience much of this illustrious city by strolling, from the community around St.
Stephan’s Church to the Hofborg, or old palace area. There are many show Tourism Places to be discovered, plus several amazing museums creating Vienna an excellent spot to travel because of its lifestyle.

    4. Amsterdam

Amsterdam Similar to Venice, Amsterdam’s attraction is in its pathways. The city is almost a web of pathways, and there is a boat of any size or shape, and for just about any situation you may have. The city center place is a place of amazing Nederlander attraction, however the rivers are really what make this one of the Excellent Tourism Places in Europe to take a Tour. Also, like all huge Western places the lifestyle is ever-present in the form of museums of the excellent Amsterdam performers, among them Van Gogh and Rembrandt.

    5. Barcelona

This city with the little city experience but the modern perspective is actually an invisible gem when searching for the Best Tourism Places in Europe to check out. Situated on the Mediterranean sea Sea in hilly terrain that gives it environment, this second city in The country gives the present that it can offer everything that the excellent places of Europe can give, but gives off the experience of a compact sized city place. For delicacies, you really ought to encounter the Tapas Dining places.

This is clearly just a little example of the Excellent Tourism Places to check out in Europe, but every one of these Tourism Places provides a rather unique function that makes it special from other Tourism Places. If you are thinking about a Tour to Europe before long, we wish you’ll try to take in one or more of these amazing Tourism Places. But attempt to interact with yourself inside the city to experience what gives them their character.

  • 15 Attractions Not to Miss on a London Walking Tour

15 Attractions Not to Miss on a London Walking Tour

LONDON…A WALKING TOUR. Begin the walk on Whitehall, near Big Ben:

    THE ADMIRALTY

The rambling building on your right … and the chief office of the governing body of the Royal navy. Here Admiral Nelson lay in state after his death at Trafalgar in 1805. The building is secluded from Whitehall by a charming stone screen designed by Robert Adam in 1760.

    ADMIRALTY HOUSE

… on the south of the Admiralty … used for government receptions.

    HORSE GUARDS

This section of the Admiralty has a picturesque clock tower built in 1742. Two mounted troopers of the Household Cavalry (in resplendent uniforms) are posted here from 10 AM – 4 PM, but they are relieved every hour. At 11 AM, the ceremony of the CHANGING OF THE GUARD is performed… a colorful spectacle lasting about 1 ½ hour.

    BANQUETING HOUSE

This is the chief surviving part of the Royal Palace WHITEHALL, which was an early and splendid example of Classical architecture, built in 1619, and the first example in England of the style evolved by the Italian architect Palladio. In the 13th century this was known as York House, when it was seized by Henry VIII who enlarged it and changed the name to Whitehall. The old palace originally covered a large area now bisected by Whitehall Street and extended east to the river. For 100 years this was the chief residence of the court of London. Henry VIII was married here to Anne Boleyn in 1533, and died here in 1547. Elizabeth I was taken from the palace to become a prisoner in the Tower, and returned in triumph on her accession as queen. After the building was mostly destroyed in the great fire of 1619, plans for a new palace were drawn up, but only the Banqueting House was completed. From a window in an annex on the north side, Charles I stepped to his execution in 1649. The well-proportioned Banqueting Hall is 110 feet long by 55 feet high, and is especially remarkable for the 9 allegorical ceiling paintings designed for Charles I by Rubens.

    10 DOWNlNG STREET

The official residence of the Prime Minister… famous out of proportion to its appearance. It is named after its builder, Sir George Downing. The interior was rebuilt in 1960 but most of the historic features were incorporated. During the demolition of the old building, remains of the original Whitehall Palace were brought to light, including part of the great hall converted by Henry VIII into a tennis court. Samuel Pepys the diarist, lived approximately on this site from 1658 to 1660.

    CENOTAPH

Rising in the center of Whitehall Street, this monument is inscribed …to the Glorious Dead” and commemorates all servicemen of the Empire who gave their lives in the two World Wars.

    JAMES PARK

The most attractive park in London … 93 acres bounded on the north by THE MALL and on the south by Birdcage Walk. It was once a marshy meadow, which was drained by Henry VIII and converted into a deer park adjoining his new palace of Whitehall. The lake was added in 1829.

    QUEENS GALLERY

On the south side of Buckingham Palace and through Buckingham Gate. This was formerly the private chapel of the palace, but was converted to show a selection of the best art in the Royal Collection.

    BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Originally built in 1702 and rebuilt in 1913, this palace has a classical facade 360 feet long. The palace was little used until the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, after which it became the permanent residence of the Court. The apartments of the royal family are in the north wing. Visiting is not allowed. (Recently the queen opened part of the palace during the months of Sep/Oct…to help pay for rebuilding Windsor).

    ROYAL MEWS

Where the Queen’s horses are stabled and her coaches are kept. The coaches include the splendid State Carriage from 1762, which is used for all coronations, and the Irish State Coach used in 1852 by Queen Victoria for the Opening of Parliament, and the glass State Coach from 1910, which is used for Royal weddings.

    VICTORIA MEMORIAL

Completed in 1911 by Sir Thomas Brock. From a platform embellished with marble water basins, rises a pedestal surmounted by a gilt-bronze figure of VICTORY, at whose feet sit COURAGE and C0NSTANCY. At the base, facing the Mall, is the seated figure of Victoria, 13 feet high, carved from a solid block of marble. On the sides of the pedestal are marble groups, which represent TRUTH, MOTHERHOOD, and JUSTICE. Around the memorial are further groups in bronze symbolizing SCIEIICE, ART, PEACE, PROGRESS, NAVAL POWER, INDUSTRY and AGRICULTURE. The small garden surrounding the memorial is enclosed by a balustrade with piers supporting sculpture, which includes the Heraldic Shields of countries in the British Commonwealth.

    CLARENCE HOUSE

The home of the Queen Mother until her death in 2002. The interior was restored in 1949 for Princess Elizabeth, who occupied the home until 1952. Princess Anne was born here.

    JAMES PALACE

A rambling and picturesque brick mansion of Tudor origin built around several courtyards. It was once the official London residence of the Royal Family and the scene of all-important Court Functions. Foreign ambassadors are still accredited to “the Court of St. James”. The name of the palace is derived from a leper hospital dedicated to St. James the Less, which was located here until Henry VIII replaced it with a palace designed by the artist Holbein. The chief relic of this Tudor palace is the picturesque four-story GATEHOUSE or CLOCK TOWER. No public visits to the palace. (Princess Diana’s casket was “held” in the chapel until public outcry caused the monarchy to move it to Kensington Palace).

    PICCADILLY CIRCUS

A very colorful square … on the north is the NEW PICCADILLY HOTEL from 1908 … on the south is the modern wrought-iron entrance to ST. JAMES CHURCH, designed by Christopher Wren in 1676. The heavy Renaissance-style facade belongs to BURLINGTONHOUSE, and is the headquarters of the ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS. An imposing archway opens to the center where there is a statue of the founder of the Academy … Sir Joshua Reynolds. Special loan exhibitions are often held here. Galleries also contain diploma works presented from artists on their election by Academicians, such as self-portraits by Reynolds and by Gainsborough … plus many sketchbooks of famous artists, as well as their palettes and painting tables. Here, also, is the MICHELANGELO TONDO, a relief of the VIRGIN AND CHILD, and the only sculpture by Michelangelo in England. The RITZ HOTEL is on the south side of Piccadilly, and was one of the first steel-framed buildings built in London.

    TRAFALGAR SQUARE

Commemorates Nelson’s great naval Victory of 1805. The square was laid out in 1929, partly on the site of the Royal Mews. On the south side rises the NELSON MONUMENT. On the pedestal are four bronze lions by Sir Edwin Landseer. They were cast from cannon recovered from the wreck of the Royal George, which sank in 1782. Additional reliefs, cast from captured French cannon, show scenes from Nelson’s battles. At the corners of Trafalgar are statues of Generals Napier and Havelock. Behind the Nelson monument are two ornamental fountains. Above the northeast corner is an equestrian statue of George IV. A fir tree, the annual gift of the people of Norway in memory of the hospitality shown their Royal Family during WW2, is illuminated here every Christmas. On the north side, across the street is THE NATIONAL GALLERY. The church is ST. MARTIN IN THE FIELDS.

  • Guide to Visiting Chicago, Illinois

    Guide to Visiting Chicago, Illinois

Once upon a time, Chicago was a city best known for its meatpacking facilities, its shady political machines, and its hapless baseball teams. Today it is a place where all things are possible. This shining Midwestern city is an economic, cultural, and innovative powerhouse of America. You’ll sense its creative energy as you stroll among the skyscrapers lining the Chicago River, wander among the postmodern artworks of Millennium Park, or escape the urban atmosphere for the shores of Lake Michigan.

If it’s an active escape you crave, Chicago is one of the best running cities in the United States. Go to the lakeshore and you’ll figure out why. An endless, exquisite bicycle and pedestrian path stretches the length of Lake Michigan. Among the first-class amenities along the eighteen-mile stretch are distance markers, water fountains, bathroom stops, bicycle rental facilities, historical monuments, and gorgeous views of Chicago Harbor and the dynamic cityscape. Cyclists, rollerbladers, walkers, and most certainly runners regularly frequent this stretch at many times of day, and almost all days of the week. Despite the risk of weekend crowds, the Chicago lakeside is overall a practically perfect place to run.

    • Distance: The Lakefront Run is a classic out-and-backer, but just don’t get lost in the scenery and the skyline and head too far out. Our Blaze researcher’s six-mile run turned into a ten-miler when she got distracted by the sailboats.
    • Mile-Markers: The Lakefront path is regularly marked for distance-conscious runners, but beware – there are actually two sets of mile markers along the route. Although both sets are accurate (to the best of BTG‘s knowledge), track your progress on only one of the two sets provided.
    • Ice: In the winter, the curve of the path around Oak Street Beach tends to get icy. Tread carefully in that area, or avoid that stretch entirely during snowy months.
    • Hot Air: See “Did you know?”

Did you know? While known as the “Windy City,” Chicago’s nickname doesn’t come from its climate. During the nineteenth century city politicians could not stop crowing about how great their city was. Their boasts eared Chicago its windy designation after the rest of the world decided they were full of hot air.

  • 7 Tips to Know Before Traveling as a Couple

7 Tips to Know Before Traveling as a Couple

In a life that is dictated by routines, vacations and traveling is a thing that helps keep us sane. The idea of taking annual leaves regularly makes a lot of sense. The last thing any of us want, on his or her travel, is a non-compatible travel partner. If you are on your own, traveling with a friend or looking for a travel companion, a few tips might help you from having a trip to hell. Here are seven tips for traveling as a couple:

    • Decide upfront why you are going and what you want to get out of the trip.
    • Money has the potential of destroying the best of friendships, let alone create problems if your travel companion is a mere acquaintance. Its best to decide what, where, and how much you will be spending on mutual expenses.
    • Prepare a tentative itinerary; places you want to visit, things to do and time to be spent at each location.
    • Traveling with some one has benefits, but even then, you should get sometime to yourself. Make allowance for time that each will be spending on their own.
    • Every one enjoys different aspects of travel. It’s good to figure out each others preferences before getting stuck together on a rather costly trip. Some of us are night people while others can’t keep their eyes open after dark. Some like everything decided and planned, others are more spontaneous. Some like to indulge in the culture while others prefer to immerse in the sights only. Make sure you and your companion share some views, if not all, regarding traveling.
    • Unless you are a 100% sure about the person you are traveling with, pack some earplugs, they can be a life line during an otherwise sleepless night.
    • Have an open mind & a generous heart. Give the other person some space & make the most of your solo time as well. Have fun and keep it enjoyable for both.

When visiting a new country, there is no better way of exploring it than by getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road. The land cruisers may have a fridge, camping gear and rooftop tents for those that are planning on visiting the Kenyan national parks.

    1. Best Vehicles

For city use, options will range from small to luxury sedans and even 4x4s. For out of city use, options will focus on rugged vehicles with good ground clearance and capabilities for the poor roads found ‘off the beaten track’.

Double cabs are very popular 4×4 vehicles for self-driving in Africa because it handles all road types.SUVs are also popular with customers, have space for up to 5 customers, and have a slightly higher cost. Land cruisers are more luxurious, have more space, and are the ultimate way to explore Kenya, but have a higher cost than other 4×4 vehicles. These cars are great for road trips!

    1. Renting a Car with a Driver

Tourists can increase their comfort and luxury by hiring a driver as well when renting a car. Many car rentals allow customers to hire drivers with a reasonable extra cost, which makes their trip more comfortable and relaxing.

This is a consideration not to be overlooked: driving in the country is no ‘walk in the park’, requires knowledge of roads, local conditions, how to manage officials. It also leaves you free to enjoy more of the areas being traveled through with intimate local knowledge on hand.

    1. Tips for Self-Driving

Visitors should conform to traffic rules and regulations, such as speed limits, and drive on the left-hand side of the road. Most roads are reasonably maintained, but customers should be careful about potholes, livestock and even people crossing the road, to avoid accidents or damage. Kenya is considered safe for self-driving but tourists should always lock the car and not leave valuables unattended.

Tourists should select the right vehicle, in terms of terrain especially for the national parks, model, price, purpose, space, and additional facilities provided by the company. We hope the travellers are able to easily rent the perfect car for their adventures in Kenya.

VisaMapper.com: Why Every Traveller Should Use this Site

Recently, we have posted an article that tackles about the different types of visas and the countries that do require and do not require a visa. In our endless quest to make your international travel more convenient, today we will feature a very useful site called VisaMapper. This site can tell whether or not the country you will be travelling to needs a visa. Yes, this site is practical!

Among hundreds of sites in the virtual world, VisaMapper has the most user-friendly interface. Every piece of information you will need is presented right at its home page. This means you do not have to click many buttons to get what you want. Furthermore, unlike other sites, VisaMapper does not show deceiving advertisements.

At the topmost part of the site’s home page shows “I am a citizen of” and a drop-down menu. Here, you will choose what country you are a citizen of and the site will immediately tell you which countries do and do not require a visa.

Basing on your citizenship, the interactive world map of the site will tell you the visa requirements of every country. Looking at the image, you will notice that VisaMapper follows a color scheme:

    • Countries that require a visa prior to arrival are colored maroon (although the color appears to be violet).
    • Countries that do not require a visa prior to arrival are colored light green.
    • Countries that have visas available upon arrival are colored dark green.
    • Countries that require online visa application are colored cream.
    • Countries where travel is restricted and/or forbidden are colored red.
    • The country colored blue is the country of citizenship.

VisaMapper collects information via crowd sourcing. This means that a visitor is allowed to input data in the site. This is why there are some countries that are colored black. It signifies that the data available for such countries are unclear.

For instance, if I choose Canada as the country of citizenship, then the only country that appears black is Botswana. In addition, there are two countries requiring me to process an online visa application. These are Sri Lanka and Australia.

The good thing about VisaMapper is it also allows you to view the visa requirements of other nationalities. Say for example your Vietnamese friend calls you to ask if he needs a visa to go to the US, with the help of this site you can confidently answer, “Visa is required prior to arrival”.

DISCLAIMER: Although VisaMapper is undeniably informative and useful, it should not be used as a substitute for official government websites providing the same travel information. If you are planning to go overseas, then always be knowledgeable about your destination!
